Holidays in Thassos
Thassos is the most northern Aegean island and is a part of the Kavala Prefecture. Thassos is only a short ferry boat ride from the Greek mainland, either from the port of Kavala or Keramoti. This easy access also makes Thassos an ideal location for a weekend visit and for long summer holidays.
Easy access is just a small part of what Thassos has on offer. Also known as the Emerald island, it has a verdant interior, with thick pine forests covering craggy mountains, crystal clear mountain streams and waterfalls. The forests reach all the way to the coastline where you can find beaches for all tastes. From snow white to golden sands and pebble beaches all caressed by the limpid turquoise Aegean Sea. Thassos offers a choice of villages to visit, from busy seaside resorts, to traditional fishing villages and classis Greek mountain villages. Enjoy a stroll around, you will always find somewhere to enjoy some of the delicacies Thassos offers, including freshly caught local seafood and of course in the mountain villages you must try the Thassian speciality kid on the spit!
Thassos is named after the grandson of Agenoras, the king of Phoenicia. Legend has it that Agenoras sent his sons and Thassos to search for Europa who had been kidnapped by Zeus who disguised himself as a bull. Thassos's search led him to what we now call Thassos island. He was captivated by the climate and nature and gave up his search and settled the island, many modern day visitors fall in love with Thassos for the same reasons! Thassos has also been known by other names during its history, such as Hieria - the cool summer breeze, Aithria - the clear blue sky, Coast of the Goddess Demetra - for the fertile soil and Dasos taken from the Greek for forest.
Thassos offers much more than beach holidays. As mentioned the islands mountainous interior is covered by forests and enjoys a network of unpaved roads, ideal for walking, cycling or you can explore with a jeep.
These routes criss-cross through deep green valleys with bubbling streams and waterfalls and can take you to the top of the island, Ipsarion which stands at 1204 meters and will leave you amazed by the views over Golden beach and all the way to Samothraki and Limnos!
